According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), the coronavirus (COVID-19) has a death rate around 3%. This number in and of itself is very high for a disease that’s as contagious as coronavirus. By comparison, COVID-19 is 30X deadlier than the flu. But this is NOT the only reason why world governments are in panic mode over this disease. There is a statistic that officials are being very quiet about.
Early last week, CDC Regional Director Robert Quigley stated that 80% of those infected by coronavirus show no symptoms. On the surface this sounds like good news right? However, the following day the CDC attempted to ‘clarify’ his statement by quantifying aspects of the numbers he stated. They stated that of all deaths, approximately 16% come from the age group 80 and up, and 8% from the age group 7 and under. Why? Because they realized that his statement let slip an important fact that public officials aren’t talking about: IF YOU GET SICK WITH CORONAVIRUS AND SHOW SYMPTOMS YOU HAVE A GOOD CHANCE OF DYING and here’s why:
Based on 86,992 known cases and 2,979 deaths (as of Saturday, 29 February 2020), 20% of the 86,992 would equate to 17,398 symptom-showing cases. Of these cases, 2,979 people have died. For clarity, let me state this another way: the 80% who never show symptoms do not die from this disease. All the deaths come from the 20% who end up showing symptoms. So, while coronavirus kills about 3% of everyone infected, that 3% figure comes from the 20% (17,398) of those that actually fell ill with symptoms. (For the record, as of Saturday, 29 February 2020, the death rate stood at 3.4% based on total known infections and deaths.)
If this is the case, coronavirus kills 17% of those showing symptoms (2979 is 17.1% of 17,398). In other words, if you catch the coronavirus and fall ill, you have a 17% probability of dying. This is why government officials are sounding the alarm as if the building is already burning down.
However, the news is a bit worse than this. In the CDC’s attempt to ‘clarify’ Regional Director Quigley’s comments, they stated that 16% of deaths are from the age group 80 years and up, and 8% of deaths from the age group 7 and under. In other words, 74% of COVID-19 deaths come from the age group 8 years to 79 years, which is pretty much most of the world population. In their effort to ‘clarify,’ they inadvertantly revealed the true scope of this virus.
Interestingly, there is no publicly released break down of how many deaths there are from cases where NO symptoms are showing and from cases where there ARE symptoms showing. This stat is conspicuoulsy absent. Is it because what I’ve just revealed is in fact the truth? Non-symptom showing people simply don’t die from the virus? Is this the reason why world leaders have been on television all weekend trying to calm fears? Is this why Eastern and Western governments have taken the unprecedented move in modern times of quarantining entire towns and cities?
Over the weekend, Mike Ryan of the World Health Organization (WHO) said, “This is a reality check for every government on the planet: Wake up. Get ready.” This is by far the most honest statement I’ve heard yet from any international body about the deadliness of coronavirus.
When the Chinese government first started tackling the coronavirus, they repeatedly told the world that there was nothing to worry about. They clung to this narrative for months claiming things were under control and well contained. It’s painfully obvious by now that they lied.
Now you have Middle Eastern and Western governments saying similar things. Don’t worry, nothing to fear, we’re on top of it. And as I write, since my last posting on Friday 29 February, several more countries have reported out breaks.
On Saturday, 1 March 2020, President Trump held a news conference announcing new cases of community spread coronavirus in the U.S., from an unknown source. We all know Trump isn’t the most polished speaker and tends to speak his mind. Except in this news conference, gone were sweeping grand claims, gone were the attacks on media and political opponents, and gone were fact-less assertions and baseless claims. Instead, you witnessed a Trump that, through the sheer gravity of the situation, was measured, polite, and doing his best to exude calmness. He even politely asked the media and political opponents to not stir up fear. If the world needed an indication that the situation we face with coronavirus is deadly serious, we just got it.
How To Prepare For Coronavirus
There is no cure. So the only thing any of us can do is to prepare ourselves to weather a flu-like illness. By now the whole world is scrambling for face masks, so you’ll be lucky to get your hands on one of those. But there are other more important things you should do.
Buy drinks like Gatorade (a case). These will help you to stay hydrated during sickness, and they replace important electrolytes. Buy flu medications that ease flu-like symptoms, the aches and pains. Tylenol and Aleve are a must, as these help with body aches and fever. Buy multi-vitamins, for these will help the body recover during sickness. If you take prescription medications, be sure to have a few months on hand, for there will be disruptions in the ability to distribute prescription medicines. Be sure to have two weeks of extra food on hand. This will help should you need to stay home. Do all of these things now. If people start to panic, stores will run out of medicines and supplies. Finally, if you do get sick and have difficulty breathing, immediately seek emergency help. Coronavirus kills most people through respiratory distress.
Please tell everyone what I’ve just said. The time has arrived. The door has closed to containment and coronavirus is here.
